The second part of my Ebenezer song said, "till by your grace it is done." I read and hear those words, "thus far has the Lord helped" and I add my own performanced-based editorial - "but no further." I am in a bit of a difficult period just now, feeling like I am "under performing" in the kingdom. So grateful for grace that means my under performance does not disqualify me from receiving help. In fact, editorializing a phrase from a Pauline epistle..."where under performing abounds, grace does much more abound."
Yes, I am mindful of Dallas Willard's words that "grace is not opposed to effort, it is opposed to earning." But when my best efforts aren't enough - I raise my Ebenezer both as a memorial and as a cry for help. The God who is rich in mercy always responds.
